Incarcerated people and those who support them continue to face serious challenges with food, healthcare, safety, and access to programs. The creation of an independent Corrections Ombudsman’s Office would provide transparency, and accountability. This office would provide incarcerated individuals and their supporters a trusted place to bring concerns, ensuring issues are addressed fairly and that systemic solutions are found.
This bill would restore parole eligibility for anyone who has already served more than 10 years and met 10 known milestones to serve the rest of their sentence on parole. Lots of incarcerated people have demonstrated growth, rehabilitation, and change during their incarceration. The Long Term Sentencing Act provides a pathway to prove their readiness to return to society and contribute in positive ways. This bill is about recognizing redemption and creating hope for incarcerated people and their supporters.
